Last Saturday or Sunday former President George H.W. Bush and his son Jeb met with Obama for 30 minutes. Later, when queried by the media, Bush Sr. replied "It was a good meeting." My rightwing connection draws a blank on this event. The parameters are:
1. Meeting follows on the heels of Presidential address to joint session of Congress and 1.5 hr session with GOP caucus. 2. A family or group audience always has greater impact on authorities than an individual audience.
Any thoughts on the focus and content of the meeting?

George H.W. wants Jeb to run for President in 2012. He used the meeting as an excuse to show Jeb where the stuff was.

~~~~~ That's interesting , Jack. I was thinking Jeb was out of politics after a long run as Florida governor. I am thinking that whatever Bush Sr. spoke to, he wanted a witness so that there would be no misinterpretation or misunderstanding of the message. My guess about Obama (and my cue is the Beer Summit) is that there were no recording devices and that the Prez had only one witness for himself.
What I am hoping is that Bush Sr. as de facto leader of the GOP, was approached by a group of un-named party members who want to vote up certain elements of health care reform before the momentum for reform is lost.
I see this President as willing to open the domestic market to Canadian and Mexican formularies at some time this year. Once that happens, there will be no going back to a negotiated healthcare package, and seniors as a whole will abandon most Medicare Part D insurors.
Just a clue but perhaps 41 was trying to reach across from the "normal" Republicans to the President and brought his son along as an idea for a bridge between the two parties. Dreamland but better than trying to remember where he left that peanut butter and jelly sandwich back in 91.
~~~~~~~~~ Yes, quite so. He was a one term president. Although I never understood why going back on a single campaign promise ("No new taxes") was enough to sink his ship in '91. To me, Bush Sr. was a bit like Eisenhower. Someone who could be bi-partisan in order to govern effectively.
Pundit Brooks, speaking on PBS news, explained that the Senate is designed so that one gadfly or underdog can effectively stop the government on specifics like bureaucratic appointments and controversial legislation. The Shelby blockade is just the latest example. Unfortunately this Alabama Senator may have prevented a Homeland Security appointment that just might have stopped the Christmas bomber. Homeland Security still has major unfilled billets.
I think the Healthcare cost rollercoaster is going to result in a dramatic change in the way Americans buy prescription drugs. Opening selected industries to foreign competition is a technique used by the German CDU postwar governments. The CDU controlled German capitalists with the threat of opening selected markets to foreign penetration. Vlad Putin has used the same method to keep Russian oligarchs in harness.

Administrators don't stop terrorists, good discipline from the top down and a spirit of cooperation stops terrorists. "I know something you don't know" belongs in third grade.

~~~ You don't have good discipline, good communication, and good information flow without good aministrators. Let's compare Napolitano and Gates. Napolitano's bureaucracy is so bloated and overblown that the best she can do is appoint good administrators and then focus on her own past successes with border control. I don't know if she promoted the Mexican Navy as executioner of druglords or if she had a subordinate with the brains to beef up their navy. The Mex. Army is much more vulnerable to bribery, whereas you cannot easily buy off the crew of a ship at sea.
I mention this because border control means knowing everything that is happening in Mexico, specifically their border states. The killing of the highschool students at Ciudad Juarez should never have happened. The Mex. Army should have an agent with a concealed cel-phone at every social gathering in Juarez. You either do this or you go to martial law. If Napolitano cannot stop the druglords in Juarez, then she cannot stop kidnappings and contracted hits from spreading to our side of the border.
